Taking Google Friend Connect to WordPress

by Ashley on April 15, 2010

I have had quite a few people need help with this, so I thought I’d share! (This is assuming you have been thorough in your transfer and are just having issues with the widget)

1. Log into your current google friend connect you will see this at the top: admin/site/overview?id=100000990 (bunch of numbers) &hl=en. Copy the number

2. Then in the address bar, delete the /overview part. Put in www.google.com/friendconnect/admin/site/settings?id=(pastenumberhere)

3. It should bring up your settings page. Type in your NEW web address where your blogspot one was. Save, then create the widget as normal.

4. Then just copy & paste that code into a text widget on wordpress and it will be good to go.

*Note- be sure that your feed address is correct so that your followers are getting your feed and you’re not simply showing the widget! Updating your feed source is a step in almost all moving tutorials, but be sure to do it so you don’t lose readers! This tutorial is assuming you are comfortable with the transfer process and understand the details involved. Contact me if you want more information about having your blog transferred to wordpress!

I wish I had known about this post sooner! Thank you so much.
Do you mind if I write about it on my blog.
I wouldn’t copy the instruction, just direct my readers to your blog to get the info.

Thanks so much for visiting my blog on my SITS Day!

Sure! No problem! I’d appreciate the link, the four steps make it so much easier. It took a lot of google hunting, but I’ve been emailing people these instructions or trying to give them on twitter- this just makes it easier!

I’ve been keeping the email with this post in my inbox because it just might be the turning point to going to WP. Were there any glitches at all with the moving of Google Friend Connect?

What theme do you have? Is there anything you would have done different?

Thanks so much!

FANTASTIC post. I couldn’t get the Wordpress GFC widget to work correctly for some reason, but following these steps, I was able to paste into a plain HTML widget and it worked fine. Thanks!
